A Letter from Charlotte:

"Stonehenge"

The quaint thing about this letter is that it was written at the crack of dawn, while Charlotte was still deciding about yet another promotional trip. Curious that she felt the need to communicate at such a transitional moment… and she comments about my recent trip to Los Angeles and a postcard of smog I had sent. She mentions an art show I participated in, but I have no memory of. As always her typewriter wasn’t up to par and as always the griffin was on her mind.

June 13

Dear Bob,

Thank you for the smog. By now you will no doubt have had your fill of that rich, bracing air and be back in the land of Prairie Home Companion. I was glad to hear you are feeling much better (or were if you have not developed a case of carbon monoxide poisoning or stayed to become a beach bunny… buck bunny, of course… or have I got my nomenclature mixed up? I shall have to check on this. The thought of you I your blue cap and a coat of suntan oil is somewhat unnerving. How did I get in to this, anyway?)

I should perhaps say that it is about 5: 30 AM and I getting ready to go to New York… or rather I am trying to talk myself into getting ready. I am not keen on this trip.

We have had temperatures up in the 90’s with high humidity for five days in a row until yesterday when it was just a lovely summer day, but today it is suppose to be torrid and humid again. I was in Washington (DC, that is) a couple of weeks ago and it was hot there, too. Before that I was in Halifax, Nova Scotia and it was hot there, too but then it got chilly and rainy and I was so glad. I am very tired of going places and wish to stay home and my book. Any book.

I am still having work done on the house. It now has a lovely deck and strange things are happening with old railroad ties down below. Eventually they will be flowerbeds and things, but right now it looks like Stonehenge.

I am relieved to hear that the griffin is drying nicely… one would expect a griffin to take kindly to being fired, also. At least I would, but then I have not met many griffins in person except a girl named Alice Griffin I went to school with in the seventh grade and I never did happen to ask her how she felt about this.

Thank you also for your postcard announcing your show… or rather the one you in which you participated… I hope it was an overwhelming success and you sold lots of nice monsters. I was miffed that they did not show one of your sculptures instead of somebody else’s, but at least they spelled your name right and we must be grateful for such blessings as come our way.

The village clock bell of which in fact we have one right up the road a piece is now tolling six and warning me to be up, up, and away, so more anon. THE CONVIVIAL CODFISH is being released around July 1… it has a lot about Max Bittersohn in it. The one I’m working on now is mostly Sarah… I’ve shipped Max off to Finland for the duration… never mind this typewriter. It does strange things sometimes, as do we all.

As we say in Griffin-fancying circles. KEEP ‘EM FLYING.

Charlotte
