FORBIDDEN RELIGION

|
I am one of the contributors to the new book, Forbidden
Religion, edited by Doug Kenyon, the man who puts out the magazine, "Atlantis
Rising"(an incredible publication). This book is now available,
and through Bear &Co. (Inner Traditions), Rochester, VT, 2006.
The title of my chapter is "Understanding the Near-Death Experience:
Why Hasn't Science Gotten It Right?" Doug arranged this chapter
from an article I had previously writtenfor "Atlantis Rising," and
then notified me of its inclusion in the book. Truly, I am honored
to be part of any of his ventures, as he is a man of integrity
and vision.
In the July/August issue of "Atlantis
Rising," he is using another of my articles. This one
entitled "Is Humanity Experiencing A Quantum Leap In Evolution?" If
you haven't discovered this magazine yet, give it a try.

CLAIMS OF LINK BETWEEN NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES AND SLEEP DISORDERS
Dateline April 10, 2006, ABC News carried an article headlined "Neuroscientist
Finds Possible Explanation of Near-Death Experiences - Mysterious Phenomenon
May Be Related to Sleep Disorder."
Dr. Kevin Nelson of the University of Kentucky is the author of this study.
An official reply to this will be coming from Jeffrey Long, M.D. Until then,
please
know this. The questions asked of participants were extremely ambiguous,
so much so as to miss the point of the study. The control group consisted
of friends
and colleagues of Nelson - not the type of people representative of the public
at large. And, it was ABC News who claimed Dr. Nelson's study "explained" near-death
experiences. Dr. Nelson made no such claim in his paper.
Because changes in sleep patterning and dream states occur with the majority
of experiencers after their episode, and are part of the acknowledged aftereffects
of the near-death phenomenon, this study by Dr. Nelson of possible sleep
disorders as causal to near-death states is invalid. In order for Dr. Nelson's
study to be applicable, he would have to have conducted before-and-after
investigations to establish a proper baseline to even know what he is dealing
with. To use the conclusions he offered or even suggest effect before cause
violates scientific protocol.
The sensationalism caused by this study is entirely the result of ABC
News and their failure to properly investigate the report as submitted
to them.
Apparently
their staff was more interested in making headlines than in reporting news. ...PMH

2006 IANDS Annual Conference
October 25-28 University of
Texas - MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston, TX 30 Years of Near-Death-Experience
Research:
Integrating the Past, Anticipating the Future The IANDS 2006 annual conference will be unprecedented.
For the first time, it will be cosponsored and held at one of the world’s
largestmedical complexes, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer
Center. Most of the world’s leading NDE researchers and experts will
be speaking, including Raymond Moody, Peter Fenwick, Pim Van Lommel,
Janice Holden, Bruce Greyson, PMH Atwater, Sam Parnia, Pam Kircher, Maggie
Callanan, and many, many more. This gathering will be unparalleled since
Raymond Moody’s Life after Life was first published 30 years ago.
The four-day conference will be divided into two separate
segments. The first 2 days will be a comprehensive and critical review
of 30 years of NDE research, recommendations for future research, and
applications for palliative, end-of-life, and other clinical and educational
settings. The second two days will include specialized presentations
on the past 30 yers of near-death studies as well as panel discussions
of recent developments and future directions. In addition, there will
be sessions in the latter two days devoted to the needs and interests
of experiencers.
Registration for each two-day segment will be separate,
though interested participants are encouraged to attend all four days.
The first two-day segment is especially designed for anyone seeking in-depth
knowledge of NDE research and its applications, and is ideal for physicians,
psychologists, nurses, counselors, social workers, emergency medical
technicians, clergy, chaplains, and any other physical, psychological,
or spiritual health-care providers.
Continuing education credits (CEs) are already approved
for nurses, National Certified Counselors, and various Texas healthcare
professionals. We are seeking CEs for additional ategories of health
providers. Visit the IANDS website for the most current developments.
Save money on discounted early bird registration before
September 10.
For a more detailed description, go to www.iands.org and click on the Conference tab. Please forward this notice to those
who would be interested.
We hope you can join us at the MD Anderson
Cancer Center in Houston for this extraordinary event.

CORRECTION IN REPORTINGS OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES
There is now a concerted effort with researchers of near-death states
to "set
the record straight" as to percentages of occurrence. Most surveys conducted
by various magazines and organizations in the past were not scientific or even
reliable. The problem is ambiguous questions which slant answers. The result:
overestimates, that are based more on wishful thinking than anything close to
verifiable facts.
The poll used today, giving an estimate of 15 million near-death experiencers
in the United States (or 5% of the population), was conducted by U. S. News & World
Report in 1997. However, the figure more in keeping with actual case reportings
in the United States, Holland, and Germany is 4% (which makes 11 million in the
U.S.). What is of keen interest to researchers is that the 4% figure for general
populations is showing up in other countries worldwide. Because of this, researchers
are down-scaling the percentages they quote. Some references: Random inquiry
in Germany (Schmied, et al) conducted in 1999 and the original Gallup Poll done
in 1982.
For those people who were near death, nearly died, or who did die but later
revived or were resuscitated, the estimate of one-third that was previously
used to indicate
how many would have a near-death experience is also over-inflated. The number
is closer to between 12 to 20 percent. The real problem here, though, is with
children.
There has never been any survey of any kind that addresses child experiencers
of near-death states. A given assumption in poll taking is that an individual's
near-death experience occurred in adulthood. Preliminary work by Melvin Morse,
M.D., a pediatrician in the State of Washington, suggests that with child experiencers
the figure is closer to 70% - more than double that of adults. Since Morse's
work has yet to be duplicated, especially in other countries, no conclusions
can yet be drawn as to what this difference might mean.
It can be said that near-death cases are on the rise.
What cannot be said with any real degree of confidence is by how much.

Beyond the Indigo Children - P.M.H. Atwater
Makes Rare SW Appearance
Hear the truth about the so-called Indigo Children and
the traditions of prophesy, mystical revelation and social sciences with
author and inspirational speaker PMH Atwater.
What is Ascension? What does it mean and how does it affect our kids? The New
Children are powerful, and they are motivated to change things – IF we
can help them defuse and redirect their anger . . . their impatience with anything
false or inauthentic. The New Children are not like any other generation of record.
How they differ is nothing short of amazing!
Atwater will be discussing her latest book, "Beyond the Indigo Children:
The New Children and the Coming of The Fifth World" on Friday, February
10th at 7pm at Sandia Prep, 532 Osuna Road, NE.
There’s no doubt about it. Children born since around
1982 are unlike any other generation on record. First parents and then
teachers began to take note of a new and special generation of children,
children now known as Indigo's, or ‘new kids’.
Soon after medical doctors, psychotherapists, educators and others
began to study
them. Skeptics might have easily dismissed the phenomenon, until now. U
have all recently reported on the growing phenomenon of these New Kids.
P.M.H.Atwater, author of Beyond the Indigo Children says that they’re
unusually intelligent (even if some of them are flunking in school), are
clever innovators and problem solvers, gifted entrepreneurs, have a certain
ease with
the new math, physics and technology, are volunteer-minded and group-oriented.
Most have a sense that they are healers here to mend things, and display
conceptional thinking styles at startling early ages.
Fourteen year old Scott Black from Santa Fe, a self-proclaimed ‘star
child’, remembers his Fifth Grade teacher drawing hieroglyphics on
the board. teaching “I
could actually read them”, Scott says. “I knew then that I am in
the world to change the world.” And many of these incredibly psychic
children, according to Atwater, remember their birth (as if they were an
observer), and,
like Scott, their previous lives in some detail.
On the flip side, they possess an innate impatience and anger. Even the most
loving exhibit a peculiar type of frustration with anything inauthentic, overly
exaggerated, or untrue. Some contend with a dizzying array of learning disorders
that confound psychologists and counselors, teachers and parents.
P.M.H. Atwater is a distinguished researcher of near-death experiences, a chaplain,
spiritual counselor and visionary. She is the author of seven books, including
The New Children and Near-Death Experiences. w
Atwater says that it is evolution that is speeding up, not time, and the
children are evolution’s front edge, pushing the boundaries, challenging
the status quo and irritating convention. She will be speaking on Friday,
February 10th
at 7 pm in Albuquerque at Sandia Preparatory School, 532 Osuna Road, NE.
Tickets are ten dollars at the door.

THE BEST ARTICLE ON THE
NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER
READ:

Pim van Lommel's face spreads across the entire cover of "Ode" Magazine,
December, 2005, Vol. 3, Issue 10, and appears again and again in the featured
interview of him entitled: " Life
Goes On: One of the world's most intriguing scientists proves the existence
of a soul."
If you attended the IANDS conference in Virginia Beach, VA this September,
you met Pim, as he was the main keynote speaker. This Dutch cardiologist, and
his team, conducted the largest prospective, clinical study of the near-death
experience ever done, a study that was published 12-15-01 in "The Lancet" medical
journal. The interview/article in "Ode" is absolutely incredible,
the best yet done on the subject, in my humble opinion. I note in the article
that "Thanks to his research, he learned so many valuable lessons that
he decided to abandon his career in cardiology in 1992 and dedicate himself
fully to further research, publishing, and lecturing on the subject of near-death
experiences."
Although a Dutch publication, its website is
multilingual, and it has numerous field offices including one in the United
States at: ODE USA LLC, Attention
Puneet Ahluwalia, 8300 Arlington Blvd., #D3, Fairfax, VA 22031. "Ode" Magazine
is perfect for near-death experiencers, people on the spiritual path, for anyone
committed to a more sane, sustainable, and abundantly satisfying world.

KENNETH RING

On December 13, 2005, Kenneth Ring turns 70.
Ken is the one who validated the work of Raymond Moody and by doing so
ensured that near-death studies would become a legitimate subject for
research, explorations, and debate. He made near-death more than an
"interesting" phenomenon; he made it real.
The International Association For Near-Death Studies, and the success
it has
enjoyed, owes its existence to many, but initially to Ken. He had the
vision and the energy to, as they say on "Star Trek," make
it so - both as
Past-President, Past Journal Editor, Protector, Defender, Promoter, and
Guide. The fact that he has long since retired all his many posts, does not
lessen the impact he has had, or how deeply he is loved by the community
built up around near-death studies.
And I owe my entry into this field to him, as well. It was Ken who,
after
reading my little tome, I Died Three Times in 1977, hunted me down
by
telephone. A few days later he was an overnight guest with my husband
Terry
and I, discovering that I too was a researcher doing what he was doing
-
without any knowledge of him or Raymond or the newly established
organization called IANDS. His cryptic words, "It is now time
for you to
join your peers," turned my life around in ways I could have never
imagined.
How can I ever thank him?
There is no adequate way to say thank you, except the greeting: HAPPY
BIRTHDAY! Dear Ken! May you enjoy many more years of good life and
good
health. May you know how much you are loved and admired by millions
of
people throughout this world. You helped us all. You gave us back
ourselves, proving that our stories had substance and meaning. Through
the
rigors of science, you returned that which is of the spirit to what we
deem
the spiritual.
Thank you, Ken, for being who you are, for reaching out to me one fine
day
and changing me forever. In gratitude and true Thanksgiving, PMH

THE EFFECT OF HUMAN THOUGHT AND
EMOTIONS ON WEATHER PATTERNS
Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson, wrote about the effect of human
thought and emotions on weather patterns in their book, Spiritual
Politics (Ballantine Books, New York City, 1994). You can go back
in history,
even recent dates, and see the correlation between the build-up of
human thoughts and emotions in a given area and the drama nature
produces in the way of weather patterns that will mirror that build-up.
Some
cultures recognize this "tit-for-tat" relationship; most
don't. What Corinne and Gordon wrote about is true. I have seen it
for myself, and wrote my own piece about this relationship in my book,
Future Memory (Hampton Roads, Charlottesville, VA 1999---originally
published in 1996).
You can read
online an article about this from Corinne and Gordon,
entitled "The
Effect of Human Thoughts and Emotions on Weather Patterns." The
two of them produce a wonderful E-Newsletter called "Soul
Light." To

OUTSTANDING SERVICE
AWARD
September 10, 2005, the International Association of Near-Death
Studies (IANDS) presented
P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D. with their "Outstanding Service Award," accompanied
by a film tribute to her in recognition of what
she has achieved during the last three decades.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
AWARD P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D. was presented the "Lifetime
Achievement" Award by the National Association of Transpersonal
Hypnotherapists at their 2005 Conference in Virginia Beach, VA. This
was especially meaningful to her because, in the sixties and early seventies,
she had a practice in transpersonal hypnotherapy when no one else had
ever heard of such a thing. Her first teacher, the late Dr. Irene Hickman,
had been previously honored by NATH for the same award.

A POINT OF CAUTION:
Intuition, near-death experiences, and deathbed visions
are not accepted as valid by many people. Here are some recent surprises
that strike a note of caution:
** A seminar for nurses I was to participate in later in September
of this year and located in Phoenix, Arizona, was canceled because
the two
backers, both banking institutions, withdrew their funding because
they felt the subject matter was "unchristian."
** An evidential case of a near-death experience involving a young
girl was recently "dumped" as an article to appear in "Seventeen
Magazine" by the final editor before publication, because that
editor felt the child was having mental problems and needed to see
a shrink.
I am very familiar with this case and consider it to be typical of
what one can find with child experiencers. I felt it was an excellent
example
and was surprised at the editor's comments.
** My trip to China in late October was cancelled because the university
and hospital where I was to have presented my work on the near-death
experience were both concerned that I might mention the "afterlife" in
my presentation.

A TURKISH TRANSLATION
"The New Children and Near-Death
Experiences" is now available in Turkish. The publisher is
Ruh ve Madde Yayinlari (a division of the Bilyay
Foundation). While in Turkey at the recent conference, I was able
to meet the man who interpreted the text; his name is Tufan. He autographed
my copy, along with the woman who designed and created the cover, Yeni.
That is so special to me, to meet my translators and honor their work
and their visions. Yup, you're right - Tufan had a near-death-like
experience as a child during a dream state that completely changed
his life - similar to some of the stories in the book. Translating
this book was exceptionally meaninful to him and explained so much
of his life. He was indeed the right person at the right time to interpret
the text. I am grateful to Tufan and Yeni and to the entire Bilyay
Foundation. They are all visionaries, devoted to unity in humanity.
