Near-Death States: Abstract: What is now regarded as classical near-death phenomenology emerged from adult researchers interviewing adult experiencers. In essence, it is an adult model by adults for adults. Explorations of children's near-death states have used this same model; and, as a result, have produced findings typical to standard literature in the field - even though child experiencers, if given the opportunity, express themselves differently than adults and respond to the aftereffects in ways often at variance to that of adults. In 1994, I began cross-checking my original work with near-death experiencers, focusing on those who had their episode between the ages of birth and fifteen years. This approach produced new research findings that suggest the need for a new model, one that better addresses the actual patterning of near-death states and the complexity of aftereffects - especially those that imply a change or shift in brain/mind development.
